Audi anual report 2010.
The Annual Reports provide detailed information about the development of the Audi Groups business, its earnings, assets and finances.
Also available as universal iOS App.
We were asked to program a crossmedia user interface for the Audi annual report 2010.
Since we love to play with the possibilities of new technology we wanted to provide a unique experience on both: desktop and mobile.
We created a Flash website providing an easy access to the content by swiping though the content via a webcam and a unique universal app for iOS.

Science has always been influenced by science fiction.
Developments are often inspired by the inconceivably future technology found in literature and movies.
Inspired by Kubricks Movie 2001 - A Space Odyssey and a lot of Star-Trek: this is HAL9031.
HAL is the result of three years full of research and exciting development.
Think of HAL as a concept for assisting humans by controlling different electronical devices based on a artificial intelligence.
To understand the diversity of human behavior HAL has access to a lot of informations that are relevant to make a decicion.
The most important information for HAL is the position of the user. Since no one wants several cameras in each rooms HAL uses motion sensors.
Motion sensors expand the catchment area of HAL without a limit of space.
HAL recognizes every time a person moves from one to another location.
Every location (room, place inside rooms) is analyzed by HAL. The locations are constantly rated on their relevance.
HAL is able to decide if a location is still needed any more and is able to shut off all devices that are related to that location.
Hence HAL is able to activate locations and modes when they make sense.
Example:
When you wake up HAL recognizes the moment you enter the bathroom. Music fades in. If you just woke up it is very probably that you use your shower. If you are still at the bathroom after a couple of minutes the shower mode is confirmed. The AI now evaluate the decision as correct.
The music you are listening to gets louder (it is loud under the shower, adjust the volume so that the user can hear the sound).
Every 5 minutes the HAL announces the current time so that you do not get lost under the shower.
When you are listening to music HAL recognizes your movement and decides automatically to send your music to (multiple) rooms you entered. Exactly like the light, the AI decides when it makes sense to turn it off.
HAL has access to motion sensors. The system knows where you are
HAL can control different Macintoshs in a network
HAL can control Infra-Red based devices
HAL can control light and electric circuits
HAL can send audio via wireless-lan to Airport Express Stations
HAL can trigger shell commands
HAL can notice RFID events
HAL is able to speak. (By using the native Mac OS X speech synthesizers and wireless-lan)
HAL can run on several touchscreen panels for local input.
HAL is also available on iPhone, providing a input interface for communication.
HAL is constantly learning from human behavior.
HAL has access to a lot of informations like e.g. the position of the sun, how long you usually sleep or when was the last time you ate something.
Intelligence means to reduce, relate and evaluate the given facts.
At the Moment HAL can differentiate between the following situations:
you fall asleep
you wake up
you are not at home
you come back home
you are under the shower
you are on the toilet
you are working
you are reading
you are running around in your house
you stay at one position
you have visitors
Based on X10 motion sensors that are placed inside different rooms the application is able to track a person.
To track a person the system not only captures how long you have been in a room but also tries to recognize what the user is doing.
As a result, the HAL9031 AI is able to decide which device the user would like to control and further more what the user is about to do.
This can be simply a light or more advanced steps like streaming music to relevant rooms while you wake up in the morning.
Based on the position of the user the app only controls relative devices that are near the user or related to the desired action.
HAL supports two different modes of user tracking:
- Activity based user tracking
- Event based user tracking
Activity based user tracking means that locations are activated when there is motion detected. The location stays active until HAL decides that the location is not needed any more.
Activity based user tracking analyzes motion patterns based on a AI that has access to several informations related to each room.
Event based user tracking always triggers when a user switches between 2 locations. If you have visitors e.g. HAL can get confused because the user locations are based on tracking ONE person only. If HAL recognizes this the activity based tracking is being activated.
Event based user tracking makes sense if you think of how media like music or video can follow you automatically as you switch rooms.
There is no further interaction needed to trigger speakers or displays; as you switch between different locations the AI automatically streams the content to a device near you.
The catchment area of mobile devices can easily be extended to control different devices.
With location aware programming it is possible to interact with software without even recognizing it. HAL cooperates in an environment, it is part of your daily life; it is like a board computer with a growing artificial intelligence.

Enjoy Aura.
Wikipedia quote:
In parapsychology and many forms of spiritual practice, an aura is a field of subtle, luminous radiation supposedly surrounding a person or object (like the halo or aureola of religious art) that some people are claimed to be capable of observing by means of their third eye.
The depiction of such an aura in religious art usually connotes a person of particular power or holiness.
In my opinion everything in the universe has a own aura and is connected to each other.
Human beings are blind.
They dont usually feel what is around them, they think their eyes are open and they can see what is around them.
When we open our eyes we capture a tiny moment of time and space. We receive a bundle of informations that form a picture of exactely this moment.
Time.
Capturing 24 frames per second we are able to combine what we think we just saw.
What if we could not only see light from 380nm up to 780nm?
What if we could feel relations between space and time?
Everything that happens affects everything around.
Wouldnt it be wonderful to be able to see another reality, another point of view?
Enjoy aura.
Aura uses a webcam to capture a livestream of the world as we know it.
Using aura you are able to see through time. See what you should feel: Another reality surrounding you all the time.

This is colorStorm.
Free download at the NUI forum, check out the link.
colorStorm is a processing Multi-Touch Application.
You can use it to change the color of RGB LEDs as seen in the video.
The case in the background reacts just like the application: the color changes immediately and the brightness depends on the sound energy.
